I dont know if he said that or not, but Morphy was indeed too hard on himself thinking of chess as a waste of his life and forcing up a lawyer carreer that didnt really worked out. He would get mad at people for wanting to talk with him about chess when he was at France.
He was obviously extremely succesfull as a chess player and most of his income came from it.

What Morphy did say:
A word now on the game itself. Chess has never been and never can be aught but a recreation.
