I wish there were some kind of penalty box for people that bump years-old threads without adding anything useful...so let me add something:

So, you can find it on the net:

Garry Kasparov: 190

Bobby Fischer: 167

Judith Polgar: 170

Robert Byrne: 170

But Carlsen, should we guess, would be around 180-190

Notice how 9 years later all these IQ numbers are still all rumors/myths.

If anyone ever claims over 160 IQ without proof online, it's bogus.  I know, you'll say there's a non-zero chance it could actually be true.  Nope.  It's a law of physics, like the speed of light.  Unsubstantiated online claims of 160+ IQ are false 100% of the time wink.png.  As you approach 160, the chances of being false increase exponentially until...bogus.

This applies to news stories and magazine articles as well.  Anecdotal allusions to 160+ IQs are false 100% of the time.

I mean, it could be good sometimes (though probably not here!). Sometimes I like being reminded of old discussions happy.png

Well... any guy with 160+ IQ is clever enough to avoid being a pro chessplayer!

Well lads with IQs transcending 160 have to possess an element of craziness, and Magnus' chess dedication is one prime manifestation.

It's likely just above average. who knows though, could be lower, could be higher.

Just above average?! Either you are supremely good at the majority of intellectually stimulating things or you are yet to appreciate Magnus' unprecedented ability in other things. His concentration, memory and visuospatial ability are indubitably exceptional relative to the average population. It has long been remarked that his memory was top of the line at the age of 5, when he was able to recall all the flags, populations, areas and capitals of all the countries in the world.

But Carlsen's IQ is not 160+...

Laskersnephew

Has anyone here ever heard any of the top grandmasters being interviewed? Sure, they're all pretty sharp guys, and they all have a great talent for chess, but seriously, do any of these guys sound like geniuses? They're just smart guys with a talent and a passion for chess. For instance, I can tell you one person who doesn't think that Magnus Carlsen is a genius: Magnus Carlsen! As he said, "I am a totally normal guy. My father is considerably more intelligent than I am."

Well of course, it depends on the standard deviation we are referring to. If 15, which is typically what we intend, then perhaps not, it would be unlikely, but if we had some bizarre abnormally high SD, it could be of great chance. In IQ tests, the SDs are typically 15,16 and 24, but no, I would almost certainly agree with you that Carlsen's intelligence quotient does not transcend 160 in the 15 and 16 SDs

Bossinater43

I imagine it would be extremely high. He shows intelligence in WAY more topics than just chess.

That's from a non credible source, kasparov's IQ was tested professionally and came out to be 135......Hikaru did an online test that came out to be 102......

The correlation between IQ and chesss is weak.......chess is actually one of the main arena studied by psychologists for the past century in determining the relationship between innate intelligence vs practice and hardwork.

In simple terms, Chess is not an iq game. And the best chess players in the world don't play chess......just like the best boxers / fighters in the world don't fight. The limited pool of participants is simply the best of those who chose the activity as a passion.

Not true, if you compare Carlsen's speech to those of high known geniuses, it's way different. Magnus actually sounds pretty mediocre and slow in speech. High iq individuals will usually talk fast or their perception would be vast and accurate.  I guess it's a smart / intuitive thing but you can literally discern someone with a iq 135+ from their expression / facial appearance.

Magnus most likely have a 130+ iq but as far as being a genius like Bill gates, probably not.

Carlsen's IQ is probably 145+

I thinki players like Carlsen have a huge staff of Granmasters proviging him with variations, openings, player-profiles soup to nuts. Players like Carlsen are fed with newest comp-lines (Fischer also critizised that, as far as i remember). That means  they dont need intelligence nor creativity. The only task they follow up is to recall lines, patterns and moves the up to date chessprograms gave them. This is professional sports, we only see the event, but not behind the scene.

Since an amateur has not such a staff behind working him, we have no chance.

Carlsen also had to start from somewhere and even if you were fed the computer lines I doubt you could remember them. And if its only about theory and such then why can magnus carlsen demolish other people online (he obviously wont leak his theory to win 8 rating points on chess 24)
