...What's the Difference Between Fritz 16 and Chessbase 14?

Hi

I'm a beginner and have been reading a number of books.

I want to start playing and am considering purchasing Fritz 16.

What is Chessbase 14 - how does it differ from Fritz?

I have downloaded Arena/Stockfish - does commercial software offer a better learning opportunity?

Thank you

Fritz 16 is a chess engine.

Chessbase 14 is a chess database of games, that can also include Fritz.

I have both. They share a lot of functions. But in general:

1) Fritz is intended for playing and training against, but has some basic database features.

2) Chessbase is intended for organizing collections of games, annotating, etc. It does include a chess engine and can analyze your games, but it is not a good choice for playing against.

I use both on a regular basis.

If you are truly a beginner, then Fritz is probably the better immediate choice. However, I would strongly suggest checking out Lucas chess, which is also free. It has a number of training modules as well and the price is right. It also comes with quite a few free chess engines.

One of the good points of Fritz 16 is it does a fairly good job of handicapping itself against lower rated players.
