What's the point of Be7?

...in the opening phase of the game when you could just as well play it further towards Black's side?

Scottrf

Depends very much on the opening.

To protect the kingside. Because it's less vulnerable to the opposition pawns and pieces. A number of different reasons.

DrSpudnik

Years ago, a Master told me that if you have to develop and castle and you just don't know what to do, get the Bishop to e7 (or e2) and then castle. You can always reposition it later to someplace better.

Lagomorph

Development. Be7 allows the bishop to access two diagonals now instead of one and the move is halfway to allowing the black king to castle.

If you move your bishop too far on its original diagonal you risk it being attacked by a pawn and you will lose a tempo by having to retreat.

A general principle in the opening is to develop your pieces without losing tempo

As always...depends on the position/opening too.

Thanks! It occured in this game:

Isn't Bishop-E7 already pretty far into black's side?

He meant to say further towards whites side.

Keine Ahnung.

I don't know why I played it. When reviewing it, Bc5 makes more sense because it controlls d4. Or even Lb4, which checks.

Yet Be7 is a correct move, I even remember having played it once or twice in the Chess Mentor or Tactis mentor.

After 11. B2, Fritz once again recommends Be7. Don't understand it either. Totally pointless, neither the Black queen nor the Black rook are under attack.
