What’s wrong with GothamChess?

I’m new to chess.com, but not new to chess. I came across GothamChess today. I found him an excellent guide and he convinced me to use the Caro-Kann and the Vienna. I’ve come to the forums and saw a surprising amount of hate towards his content. What’s so bad about him? I agree with everything he says.

His videos are aimed at a younger audience. If you’re under 18, then go ahead and enjoy yourself. If you want more balanced, peaceful videos to improve your game through positional understanding I’d recommend ChessNetwork. Very high quality analysis and quite insightful.

Doesn’t change that most of his videos are great for beginners.

A gatekeeper’s videos are never great for beginners.

The amount of bias he has towards the Sicilian is impressive. He’ll do anything to prove that the Najdorf Sicilian is a dozen times worse than the Caro-Kann. He went as far as to make a guess the ELO video called “Never play the Sicilian!” Or something of the sort, showing someone completely misplaying the Sicilian, with the logic that it’s impossible to properly play the Sicilian??? He also recommends the most dubious gambits so beginners can avoid mainlines, which I just find ridiculous.

He’s insanely clickbaity and his gatekeeping logic is extremely poorly supported, and yet he insists on continuing to be this way, earning most of these commenters’ mockery.

How can I explain... Levy Rozman is an IM and in simple compared to Levy Rozman I'm a noob and I don't see the point of explaining what's wrong with this IM who I think could beat me in simultaneous exhibition.

Now Joshua Waitzkin is also an IM and doesn't necessarily give the same advice and lessons.

So for example if I play on the Chessmaster program in time 15m+10 per move, which is important to me is not to criticize or pretend that I understand chess better than an international master but to see if his advice helps me or is relevant to my games or not.

I gave an example with the game against bots in rapid but of course it can be applied against humans in rapid or long.

At the end what is important is that when we follow a lesson or advice from an IM, Is it useful or does it help us in our games or not at all ? and not What's wrong with this or this IM ?

He's good it's just that Agadmator is so much better.

Sorry to outline this, but with your rating, one could easily convince you of about anything in chess.

If, trying out a comparison, it was such a rating for History and Geography, one could convince you the Eiffel Tower in Paris doesn't exist and is only an urban myth.

No offense meant.

Little brutal but ok

If you enjoy his videos and are learning and improving from watching them, stick with it! But as with any instruction for beginners (and as with anything on YouTube), don't unquestioningly believe that everything is entirely accurate and correct.

You found the chess.com forums, Gotham, and his advice, and created an account, all in the same day?

I’ve come to the forums and saw a surprising amount of hate towards his content.

Oh, AND you saw a lot of hate? Wow what a busy day.

And where exactly did you see this hate again?

What’s so bad about him? I agree with everything he says.

Whether or not you agree has nothing to do with whether or not people hate him, which you know, so the only reason to mention it is if you're a troll.

Which is obvious, but kangaroo kid seems to not understand (or maybe you're his alt and he just wants more drama).

Yeah, but you're 18, you'd probably be entertained if someone put puppets on their hands and did silly voices.

For the record I think levy is fine. I don't have a problem with him or his videos... and it's fine if people like him.

OP is still a troll though.

I like Gotham, I donated to the fund to buy him a sunlamp.

Basically what Sampson said. He’s a good guy but people are just hating on his YouTube clickbait and stuff like that. And a lot of his fans spread his anti-Najdorf yarrr around the forums

I was hanging out with my friend who’s obsessed with chess yesterday. He showed me around chess.com, including forums, and showed me some GothamChess videos. Simple as that.
