When I use chess engine

Recently, I use [scid vs pc] chess program to see 5~6 lines for each move, and it helps me a lot.

But the only problem is CPU usage rate,,

When I run the program, CPU usage rate of my laptop is over 50%..

Do I have to stop using it? or is it not a serious problem?

Hi Daria1996:

It should be fine as long as your computer has good ventilation.  If this is a laptop it will use your battery quicker of course.

You should be able to choose how many cores you want the chess engine to use (so using less cores won't heat up the computer as much but will analyze slower).

Maybe I have to see whether computer endures better with 1~2 lines!

Thank you :)

Cheater exposed.

Then, all people who study opening moves using stockfish would be cheaters.

Okay, don't ever see weather forecast on TV, it's a cheat.

Just predict.

The number of variations analyzed won't affect the cpu usage. You need to go into the engine configuration and see how many threads the engine is using.

You might want to install a cpu temperature monitoring utility on your laptop. If your PC has a lot of dust buildup, cpu temperature could be an issue.

The forecast today is for hot, hot, hot! It's heating up quickly today, when around noon, we can expect a lot of hot air will be blowing in from both the east and the west, creating swirling winds of conflict in the "When I use chess engine" region of the world today. This could be followed by some heavy pelting here soon, folks. I suggest we stay inside today, and bundle up by the protection of our chess engines, so we can better forecast what move - er what to wear - as we follow this strong build-up of atmospheric pressure!!! You heard it here first, folks! Now get out there and do something.

I don't think engines are the best way to study opening lines - look at master games.

(and not cheating unless it is a game in progress)

How about we look at master games, at engine opening lines, and that beautiful broccoli avatar? - And, especially, eat our veggies? But, if we must prioritize, I vote for the broccoli.

Hi Daria1966:

You computer will use about the same amount of processor usuage whether you have 2 lines or 6 lines displayed.  Just because it is displaying less lines does not mean the processor is working less hard.  If your cooling is decent on your computer you should be fine.   To make the chess engine use less power, you'd need to tell the chess engine to use less cores.

Toga constantly loses big to Stockfish. Meaning, I won't be using Toga. I've never played against an engine, ever.

daria you need to stop using a chess engine in a game in progress as above in your diagram , this breaks every rule in playing fair chess , you will not learn and your opponent will feel cheated , they were ,

if you must use a chess engine then only use it to look at the game you played afterwards so it can show you where you went wrong or right

i cannot wait for the day when the power fails and chess returns to what it should be two people doing all in their power to win without outside help

To be blamed is some kid I guess. We can also argue which came first, the egg or the chicken.

Using an engine for any ongoing game is against the rules. That is even true if you are analysing opening lines that match lines in ongoing games or potential lines (basically game with any moves).

kingofshedinjas, publically accusing someone of cheating is also against site rules.
