Where Are The Strong Chess Players?..

.. That play like Morphy and all the other chess players from the romantic time? Are no strong chess player left that play like that? All my favorite games are from the romantic era. Beautiful sac's, openings like the Evans Gambit.. Open and tactical games. Is this over? For ever?

Look at Shirov's games if you want to see a strong player who still attacks like the old players used to.

Shirov? An Icelandic IM, Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson won him last year ;) but I'll take a look to his games!

Shirov is responsible for one of the most amazing single moves ever played, against Topalov, Linares 1998

Except it was Topalov that sacked his bishop and won, not Shirov...

Really? Oops Embarassed

EDIT:

Nope, I'm pretty sure it was Topalov-Shirov 0-1

Another game of Alexei Shirov:

It is awesome! And Shirov shows how he thinks.

FrenchTutor

No, it was Shirov.

It's over because in the romantic era (pre Wilhelm Steinitz) chess masters disdained playing defense. After Steinitz being the world champion for 25 years chess masters have become not only masters of offense but of defense. >:[

Yes, I am sure.

Suggest a move for Black.

O, I see it. After pawn takes rook white plays Rg6, and the black queen is gone.

Yes, mate to follow.

Morozevich tries that style but is not always successful.  He is close at it comes to a modern day Bent Larsen.

Carlsen is a pretty creative player.  Reminds me a lot of Spassky in his prime.

Opening theory has choked a lot of the life of out modern chess.  Hard to be creative in this environment.  If Chess960 replaced the old game, we would be back to this romantic period.
