Playing a game for money is not the definition of gambling.
Playing chess, online, on long time controls, for money, is gambling.
You are close to 100% sure that's a rip-off.

So, all professional athletes are just gamblers?
In rsponse to that "wiki": The only things certain in life are death and taxes. => Everything is a gamble.
Oh good, we're responding to a wiki definition (that was apparently mostly unread) with a cute quote.
At least the OP was worth digging up after all these months.
I need to start making money playing chess online but don't know of any website. Guys does anyone know where i can play chess online for money.
Thanks
You won't make any money online with chess. Try OTB tournaments. If you're really good, you can win a little.

No, all professional athletes get paid whether they win or lose, AND they don't have to put up any of their own money.
Let's get technical:
Chess is a game, not gambling.
Poker is a game too. You can gamble on either.
Playing a game for money is not the definition of gambling.
It's pretty darn close though. Poker is a game and is often played for money.
Wiki: Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods.
If we were to be technical, we would use a dictionary for the definition of gambling, not wikipedia (lol). Chess is not a game of chance.
"the activity or practice of playing at a game of chance for money or other stakes."

Guys, I just bought a chess program, and after beating some people on my X-box I thought up a genius idea (I can't tell you the specifics, but it's really clever). Anyway what I need to know now is where I can play online for money. Thanks.
That is fuggin hilarious. I can't tell you the specifics but its really, really clever, and only I (the grand, exalted, most cleverest-est genius) have ever thought of it. Hahaha. Sho nuff.
I would argue strongly that "game of chance" is HIGHLY subjective.
Poker has skill and luck.
So does chess.
And everything in between.
Just how much luck vs skill ratio is required to make it valid to be gambling??
I like the Wiki definition better tbh.
You are free to argue and like incorrect things. Have a good day.
Hey guys,
Is there any place online where I can compete in a spelling bee online? I'm sure no one cheats on the internet, and I need to make some money.
Come to nyc and go to washington square park. They play for money everyday.
Been there, done that. Its a scam really. You may win a few games if you are good--keep in mind those guys are masters--but once word gets out they will refuse to play with you.
I would be very worried about cheating. After all, people cheat on this site where they don't get money for doing it - imagine how bad it would be if people were getting money from cheating online
If you decided to play chess for money it may be best to play only blitz and bullet games since it does take time to switch back and forth from the actual online game and an engine. Even this may not be a guarantee since a clever hacker may be able to hook the engine to the online game. I have noticed that when playing here on chess.com that on occassion during a game an opponent seems to be losing and then suddenly the opponent's play seems to sharpen up and he is suddenly winning. I do not have enough evidence to name names but I do suspect that person is cheating.
best way to play for money is going to an official tournament and play for the prize which can sometimes be very high , the more you get better the bigger the prizes get . no point playing online for cash since you will be playing a great chess engine , so really unless you can beat a modern chess engine you should really stick with tournaments .
The OP (who somehow got the mistaken idea he's an excellent player) must not have had very good results with the whole playing for money thing. I guess it didn't work out too well.
heh people make big money at the chess booths at fairs and other events; the ren-fest near us usually has one and that runs all summer long, guy probably makes over a grand a day. Think he was a low 2k (right at 2k even?) rated player and charged $10 or something for a game, paid 20 if he lost, and maybe kids were able to have one game free? Anyway the seats (about 10 boards, from memory) were usually at least 1/2 full and over a 10 hour or so day.. it looked profitable. Takes some skill; the guy was good enough to replay the game with you for a quick analysis / commentary if you wanted.
