Where does Chessbase get the games for their database?

Hello,

I was wondering where Chessbase gets the games for their database? Do they buy them from FIDE?

Is there a free database available?

I mean, they have no competitors and they have done so little improvment over the UI in so many years.

Thanks

Can't say where/how they got their initial DB, but lots of events make the games available online, and the can just grab them to include at any time.

A lot of people use their own DBs they gather, a lot of the games coming from The Week In Chess site. If you want a well annotated games database, that is probably going to be a purchase.
