I just recently bought a travel-chess set and I already managed to have one of the pieces missing. It's the black rook. So if anyone finds a small black rook, it possibly is the one I'm missing. 8[

I just bought a set from USCF.  It arrived 3 days ago and I love it.  There were no problems, I received everything when I was supposed to, etc.

I have added three sets this year to my collection from thechesspiece.com;   preferred for the styles and quality workmanship.  I have game on right now with my latest.

Not sure what the reference to google is about. I have bought sets from House of Staunton and a very hard to find Haida Gwai-inspired set from a Native American gift shop; it can be difficult to source reputable sellers and certainly more difficult than clever web searches.

This is the same as DGT Venus set which is what I chose to accompany my DGT board. I later ordered the DGT Ebony pieces since they are of a more standard Staunton pattern. I really like them both.

just a recommendation (which i chose)

CHESS SETS WITH MACASSAR EBONY & MAPLE CHESS BOARD IN COMBINATION WITH GERMAN FIERCE KNIGHT CHESS PIECES. NICE COMBO! and not too expensive.

I agree that uscf is a good way to go. I think the roll up board in either blue or green with the staunton (i prefer weighted) pieces are the way to go. You might also consider a clock and a bag.(Make sure the bag is big enough i once got one that was too small for my board!)

Late to the party, but hopefully this helps a few people. There is a nice site dedicated to cool chess sets, here it is. http://coolchesssets.net/

It's worth noting that uscfsales.com is simply a House of Staunton site dressed up in USCF banners. That's not to say that it's not recommended, just that you'll get the same stuff sold by the same folks at ether uscfsales.com or houseofstaunton.com. However, I'm sure that the U.S. Chess Federation gets a little kickback if you order through the USCF Sales site (if you care about that).

Yes you are right USCF and HOS are same, I once talked with one of the HOS live chat helper and I asked the same question. They said that they share the same warehouse and supply management. Check both sites, pictures are exactly same.

If someone wants a high quality chess set in an affordable price, chessbazaar would be the place. While their prices are significantly lower than other chess sellers, Chess Bazaar makes decent sets for the money. I usually find some genuine discounts on their sets. So yes, I endorse ChessBazaar for their good deals. I think CB is certainly alone in being inexpensive. HOS who prides themselves deeply on perfectly replicating historical chess sets. I think most of their reproductions look terrible and overpriced. NO ONE will gonna pay $3500 for 1849 reproduction. Why not just make chess sets that look original for an affordable price?

I quite like the chess sets from Purling London, ordered a Bold Chess set, and it is pretty awesome! The figures are all handmade and handlacquered. They also have an illuminated, "Dark Chess" version, which looks really cool on the photographs they have up on their website. But that's more for people who are after something fancy.

Can definitely recommend them, I really like my Bold Chess Set!

Their stuff looks more like the kind of stuff you buy to show off, not so much to play on.
