A pawn can become a queen, but a queen can never become a pawn. I love the pawns for their potential. They can become anything but a king and therefore contain all the other pieces in utero. "Pawns are the soul of chess," said Philidor. Also the pawn has the most complex variety of moves, with its on-or-two-move option at the start, its diagonal capture, and its "en passant" mechanism.

We wouldn't promote pawns to queens if queens weren't better. I look at it this way: If I had one piece taken off of the board at the start of the game, and my opponent didn't which loss would hurt me the most? Yes, certain pieces might be better in certain positions, but IN GENERAL, the queen is stronger than all of the other pieces. That's why it's worth 9 points.

Seems to me that your conclusion is not the end result of your logic.
If we were to play a game and you said I could take any of your pieces but I'd get to start with all of mine, the game would be incredibly short.
My favorite piece is... well... I love them all! But my favorite one is... well, learning chess because when I learn, I can write forums!

I understand your gist, but a queen can already do everything a pawn can and more (with the exception of en passant), so I don't think it hurts the queen any that it can't become a pawn. But yes, the pawns do have power in that they're all potential queens.

Pick up the black knight. Now close your eyes: can you feel it's contour in your hand, feel the power the piece radiates, feel the soul of the knight, feel the weight of the piece, feel the agility, feel the danger it possesses, feel it's heart as it charges to save a dansel in distress. Can you feel all that?
Now open your eyes. See the knight is a different light? IMHO

The King is the strongest attacking piece because of the phycological effect of moving the most valuable piece toward a battle
i still say queen is best
i played a casual game against chessmaster 11.. removed chessmasters queen at the start... still i lost.... queen is not that imp :D
