Nearlly all of the countries are playing chess in this web site,so which one of them the best in chess???

According to this page: http://www.chess.com/members/member_countries.html

Qatar is best with an average player rating of 1632. Malawi has an average rating of 1810, but they only have 19 members here so I don't know if the sample size is large enough to be considered statistically accurate.

If you are speaking in a more general sense, I'd say Russia is the "best in chess" simply because of the number of fantastic players (including quite a few World Champions) they've produced, followed by some of the other former USSR countries. For example: Estonia (Keres), Latvia (Botvinnik, Tal), Armenia (Petrosian), etc.

On this site, the top players are from the US, Greece, Spain, the UK, and Ireland.

It seems that the participation numbers are so wildly skewed that you can't make any statistically valid observations. About 45% of the members are from the US. The next highest percentage is UK, which is not quite 6%. (This would be a little bit higher if you included those who list England, Scotland, etc., as their country.) Russians are only about 0.4% of the members.

Hopefully we can get more players from outside the US to join.

On this site, US is, due to their huge amount of numbers but in the world, i have no idea

I hope Argentina

^^ funninly enough i would say Argentina is well up there... it is the top country by average rating with members over 500 people...  taking 500 as a minimum the list on this site is:

Argentina, France, Russia, (Hungary, Serbia, Slovina and Poland are just under 500) Iran, Netherlands, China, Italy, Israel, Romania, Philippines, Sweden, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Belgium and Greece.

Looking at that list it is clear that Eastern Europe is the strongest region. If that helps :P

Russia is number 1.I would say that Bulgaria, allready a powerhouse, will become even stronger in the future.

Well, I would say Armenia is quite big in chess. Curently we rank number 6, but historically we have produced 2 world champions, namely Petrossian and Kasparov (Kasparov left Armenia due to personal matters and never played under Armenian flag, but he admits his Armenian roots). And now we have Aronian. In general, chess is a national sport in Armenia. Starting from children of age 6 to elders of 70+ play chess vigourously. But still, Russia must be considered the top country I think.

play chess vigourously? Do they jump up and down between moves? (giggle)

Most of the previous world Champions are russians so I would have to suspect that russians are the best.

I think someone already said, but just to be clear, the average ranking on this site shown here

http://www.chess.com/members/member_countries.html

is not showing the full picture..

Take the example of the supposed highest average rank country - Nauru (which happens to the 214th least populated country in the world! It says the average rank is 2222 and 9 players... but only 2 players actually have ranked scores, so the average actually comes from those 2 players, not the other 7. So the total players really is only 2.  This clearly is not a good sample size even given the size of their country population :P

Even if the calculations were useful, looking at this by total number of players.. i would probably have to choose the Philippines.

They have the 5th most players (even assuming that the 77% of players not actually being ranked..as per example of Nauru) of all the countries here, at 5703 players, yet they have a much higher average rank (1402) than any of the other countries with more players or less players, until Romania features in 12th with 1848 players ranked average of1406. The top 4 countries by player size are between 100-150 points lower in average rank.

Perhaps the ranking page could show in brackets, the actual number of players per country that are ranked.. eg in case of Nauru:

Currently..

Nauru 9  0%  2222

 Changed to..

Nauru 2 (9)
0% 2222

Philippines!  Hehe...just joking... ;)

The USSR was unstoppable in chess prior to Fischer but they manipulated tournament results and if you're playing for your country and the choices are win or be sent someplace unpleasant, you'd be amazed what that sort of motivation does for your rating. That said, Russia and it's former satellites are probably still dominant. Just run down the FIDE top 100 list and count the Russian, eastern European or Slavic sounding names.
