By that reasoning, if their strength is to facilitate queen attacks wouldn't the queen still be the more important piece?

I would say no because it facilitating it doesn't make it more than the knight. the very fact the knight's absence doesn't help it actually shows its dependence on it. The knight, therefore, is greater.
