White's Bishop and knight attacking f7 beginning of game

OR, more formally, I am struggling with this sort of position:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. d3 Nf6 5. Ng5

with white threating to take pawn on f7 with either knight or bishop. I get that one response is for black to move his knight to h6, but surely there must be a better response for black than to leave his knight on the rim?

Pretty much every game i play as black when i play e5 ends up like this, and I'm sure many beginners like me must have had this problem!

Thanks to anyone in advance who could help! happy.png

Ah brilliant, that's so helpful, thanks! I have done that before, but was never sure whether that trade was ok for black, but i see your point that white has no development! Thank you happy.png

Yeah, just castle. if you're interested in a counter attack from that position, and want to add some spice, then look up the Traxler Counter Attack. Not for the feint hearted. Requires accurate play.

Well, thanks to both of you, will look them up happy.png  Appreciate the help guys!

Yes I agree. Just castle, and two minor pieces are better than a rook and pawn in the middlegame. You'll be all set from there! By the way, if the same kind of position happens with the fried liver attack, you need to sac the pawn because you can't castle.

Just looking at those responses now and they both look kinda crazy lol But fun so why the heck not lol happy.png
