Who is the best chess player of the whole chess history?
Who is the best chess player of the whole chess history?

Probably Philidor, who has been considered the best player in the world for a period of almost 50 years. No one has ever come close to that.

Everyone will say Magnus Carlsen but when you really think about it it's Alexander Alekhine he died as World Champion in 1946 undefeated and took the title with him to the grave (or the after life if you believe it exists) he's the forever champion until the end of time no one can touch.
I don't think you can get any greater than that.

Similar thing for Paul Morphy. They even held world championships after Morphy retired but winners were considered legitimate champs until after Morphy's death.
Same thing for Philidor.
If we are talking about the greatest in the "whole chess history" it's incredibly short-sighted to simply pick the current champion.
i'll bet Carlsen will be when his career is over.
No, he won't be better than players like Anand who could fight for world champion at 45. Carlsen will be done in 5 years and forgotten in another 5.
Surpassed, probably, but most definitely not forgotten. Karpov was #2 for over a decade. Carlsen could pull the same trick

Greates' or bes'? There're differen' meanings.

Well, as th' best player of t'is curren' generation an' of all time - so far - it'd be Magnus Carlsen, though his career's no' over ye'.
There've been many generations ef chess players an' their quali'y, an' th' quali'y of their trainin', th' mor' modern th' better, which's un of th' reasons why I pick Carlsen.
Bu' if yer talking of bes' players of each generations, then yeh could go back to those former worl' champos lik' Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Alexander Alekhine, et cet'ra.

hi alec, alekhine was a giant no doubt but guys like fischer, lasker, capa, kasparov, carlsen, maybe even karpov were slightly stronger and greater than him.

i certainly endorse the idea that philidor may in fact have been the greatest for he was so far ahead of his time by having grasped the importance of pawns, which in his time were viewed as obstacles and people shed them like autumn leaves..

please gentlemen, let's not complain, the subject of who is the greatest\strongest\best is and always will be extremely popular and not silly at all in my opinion.

There is only one argument to make that Magnus is the greatest player of all time, and that's going by his absolute FIDE rating. By no other measure is he the greatest and, to rely completely on that one measure, you have to ignore the inflation of FIDE ratings that have been occurring since the 80s.
