I have heard many discussions over who the is the greatest player of all time, or even who is the greatest with the white or black pieces. My question, which I would like answered, is who was/is the greatest player of the venerable Ruy Lopez? Is it Karpov, Fischer or some lesser known player?

I suppose to define my question more accurately my question should maybe be: "in your opinion who plays the best Ruy Lopez and why?"

Since Fischer is mentioned, his Ruy Lopez Exchange was/is great. Another name, this time from more ancient history is Siegbert Tarrasch. a recent reading of his games showed some masterly touches in his use of the Ruy Lopez.

Karpov and Fischer are often quoted in the books, but I guess all great 1.e4 players could claim some fame going back to Capablanca.

Kasparov wasn't too bad on the white side of the Ruy either Smile
