I'm pretty sure it's Magnus, yes. Right now he has an estimated net worth of $8 million, earning an estimated $2 million per year from sponsorships alone. Being the world champion and number one player in the world helps, you know.

If that's doesn't discourage aspiring grandmasters I dont know what will. He is the world champion, in several categories, rated number one, and considered by some to be the best ever. And yet has a net worth of only 8 million. It seems to me that the greatest in the world should produce a lot more fame and fortune than that.

Earning $2 million per year isn't enough for you? most people won't make that kind of money in 2 million years! Discouraging... Anyway, it is chess after all. Maybe he should have pursued a soccer career. Cristiano Ronaldo earns about $108 million per year. But then again, how much money does a person need.

Of course is more than enough for anyone. But her point is, this is the income of the very very best on the world. I suppose it is tough to earn a living from chess. But it isn't a massively popular enterntainment after all, as you pointed. Euwe said that the greatest day on his life was when he made professor; he knew what he was talking about.

Magnus wealth is nothing compared to Karpov, who not only had a successful chess playing career but after retirement became a businessmen and invested in several Russian energy and petroleum companies. I heard rumours that Karpov is nearly a billionaire at this point.

I dont think that we're talking about successful busieness of chess players, we're talking about which chess player made the most money playing chess

I've heard Fischer and Spassky raised an amount never seen before (nor after) for their rematch in 1992. In second place comes... his first match in 1972! So we have the answer to that question, unless we are talking about current players. Then it must be Carlsen I guess.

The purse for that rematch was $5 million, with the winner taking $3.35 million, which was only a one time thing. Carlsen makes $2 million a year just from sponsorship deals. Also, when Fischer departed he "only" had $2 million left.

Does Jeff Bezos play chess? if so that would make him the richest chess player, he has more money then Bill Gates at least until his wife divorces him and takes half of it

Even if he doesn't play, his resemblance to a chess pawn should earn him an honorary title of chess player.
