Magnus Carlsen, there is no one harder to beat, no one has ever reached his peak rating, he held the World Championship for 10 years during the rise of computers and incredibly strong engines available to all his opponents, has demonstrated his dominance in all formats including bullet. Computers were barely relevant during Bobby Fischer's era. Kasparov would wipe a lot of his competition off of almost complete computer preparation and strongest Soviet grandmasters. He had as much of an unfair advantage against everyone other than Karpov as physically possible. Magnus is known for beating his opponents in equal endgames where cputer preparation is the least useful or reliable. Basically everyone that had a chance of taking the title except for Ivanchuk, Kramnik, and Ding failed despite how close or how much pressure they put on him. Plus when Ding has a bad performance he sometimes crashes and burns. This is speculative but in Rapid tie breaks Magnus is likely much more favored to win. He could've held the title for at least another 5 years. But my summary of his statements was he didn't want to risk losing it in a match to someone he doesn't feel is a strong as him in a format he believes doesn't even demonstrate who the best chess player in the world is.

Who do you think should be world champion?
Ding Liren.
Like it or not, it doesn't matter. The fact is that Ding fulfilled every single step necessary for being considered world champion. Including participating (which is more than Magnus can say)
He deserves respect. And also the Title. If Magnus wants the title again he has to challenge the current champion.

Magnus Carlsen. I trust the ELO as a reliable system to confirm who is the better, understanding that the player is active.
