Who/What Are Greatest Defensive Players/Styles?

In other sports and games, I've tended (not always, but usually I think) to have more of a defensive mindset and game style.

I'm still new to chess and wondering which great players or style/openings have this characterization about them that I can maybe go and look-up and learn from.

TVM in advance everyone!

I guess I'll step in and give you the usual advice:

  • You should only be defending if you're on the verge of a loss
  • Beginners don't have a style
  • Focus on opening ideas rather than specific opening lines
  • Tactics, tactics, tactics, tactics and more tactics!
  • Study master games

Maroczy was the greatest ever defender. That is, he threw back a premature attack and won on the counterattack.

The game Bird Maroczy was a classic.

I dont think any great players are 'defensive', however i think the ones i mentioned have the greatest 'defensive' technique. That is when they needed to defend they were exceptional, not that they played defensively.

Interesting.  According to Wikipedia, Petrosian was considered by some to be the hardest player to beat.  He had many draws and it describes him as having an "impenetrable" defensive playing style."

Good entry about him and his style.  One quote was funny:

"In those years, it was easier to win the Soviet Championship than a game against 'Iron Tigran'." – Lev Polugaevsky[47]

Was Karpov really that defensive?

I guess defining defensive might be a good idea.  From they way Petrosian is described, it seemed he really did emphasize defense so much that it practically was prioritized over offense and flat out winning a match.  He seemed to be willing to take a lot of draws...or perhaps they weren't intentional, but just the result of his style.

He seemed to wait only until he could find a clear winning advantage before attacking and otherwise used cautious and defensive tactics to not lose.

That seems quite extreme of a mindset, but it's interesting that one might play that way and be so great a player.

I'm not sure if that's the way I'd ideally define or think of "defensive."  Maybe....might be good to see what ppl think of as a good way of defining defensive.
