Yeah it's because they consume more calories than their bodies use. If they eather ate less or exercised more they would not be fat.
Why are chess players fat?

Anyone can go to a beach and starve themselves, but it takes a real man to stay home and learn the fine art of chess trickery!!!

Out of the current top 10, there are only 2 or three that are a little overweight. The rest look pretty fit to me

It's from a couple of years ago. Here are some really recent ones but you can't really tell as well as the one above.

However, it doesn't appear as if he is really much heavier than the one I posted

Chess is an incredibly stressful game at the top. A player who isn't in peak physical condition has an overwhelming disadvantage. Yes, a lot of fatties at your local club, but few of them are super-GMs.
Sevians case is an interesting one.
He is homeschooled, does chess for 6-8 hours a day and still cannot find time to go for a walk.
On top of that he looks like the stereotypical geek/nerd along with probably being an autistic savant.
GREAT, just what we need to improve the stereotype of chess....
