Why are speedruns even allowed?

Why? Aren't they basically smurfing and making multiple accounts? Plus, they have the same effect which smurfing does. It messes up the rating pools.

@icravethatmineral was banned for too many speedrun accounts (his main was @an_asparagusic_acid)

No it doesn't because speedruns must get approval from chess.com; they play their speedrun and then close their account afterwards - everyone they beat get the points refunded I believe but not 100% sure

NikkiLikeChikki

If it's a speed run by a high rated player, and it's approved by chess.com, all players who lose do indeed get their points refunded. They are fun, get viewership, and nobody is harmed. What's the problem?

krazeechess

Oh I didn't know that the players who play the speedrunner get their points refunded.

How do you speed run chess???

What is speedrun?
krazeechess

It is trying to get to a certain rating as fast as possible. Usually doing it with a challenge, like only using a certain opening.

StumpyBlitzer

Speed runs as mentioned are only allowed if agreed by the site and when the goal is achieved the account closed and points refunded. If it's a smurf account please report them and if they get closed then points may get refunded if its fair play violation.

In the long run it doesn’t make much difference really. I can understand they want to give points back because of the perception, but really it doesn’t matter.

What if it was just a good player starting an account for the first time? Would that really be any different?

Your rating is going to go where it should be and then fluctuate anyway.

We aren't allowed to advertise (and even mentioning by name is sometimes touchy) chess sites, but for all the chess.com haters, I love this site and it is by far my favorite chess site happy.png

To everyone who likes a site that begins with an "L", they don't even allow speedruns according to their tos. Far superior is chess.com! happy.png

Noo! You said the word!...

Ubik42
Well I checked your graph on blitz. I don’t see the fluctuation you are referring to. You have a pretty steady increase in your rating. Well done, btw.
Ubik42
So, like I said, it doesn’t really matter. There are a few streamers here and there. Most likely you never play them, even if you do it’s one game, and they also play other people. Rating pool is just as affected.

I am fine with chess. com erasing the rating point loss, it’s cool, but it’s also performative. It doesn’t really mean anything.

Your rating is going to be what it is.
Ubik42
thinking about it I actually doubt chess com erases the point loss unless they can do it instantly, because in the meantime if you play other people.... Well it's going to get ridiculously complex very quickly.
JuergenWerner

True, I play slow and let time run out when against speed runners

Ubik42
I want to see a link to thousands of speedrunners even capable of doing it.

The guy who claimed fluctuation in rating turned out untrue.

I'm not buying it. I think you will have to play hundreds, or thousands, of games before running into a speedrunner then OMG one game. Like it matters if it was a defeat to a speedrunner per just a regular Joe.

This is drama queen stuff.

Are you playing chess for fun, because you want to improve or for ELO to display next to your name? What does it matter whether you play a speedrun, smurfer or a cheater? True, it can be annoying, but you mostly play blitz anyway and the game is over in 5-10 minutes and you move on. Most accounts are genuine players and in the long run, as you improve your game, your ELO will follow.

Anonymous_Dragon

It doesn't matter honestly. Your rating wille eventually end up where it should be
