Why are Video Games not Treated with the same Respect as Chess in terms of intelligence?

Video games can be very complex and challenging. Even more challenging than Chess. Video games such as Overwatch, Counter-Strike Global Offensive, League of Legends, Starcraft, and etc. They also have competitive ladder-like chess and take a lot of time, dedication, and studying to get good at those competitive games. Why isn't playing video games considered to be a good thing like chess?

If your good at chess, people will call you smart. If you're good at video games, people will call you a loser? Why is that?

I'm someone who has a chess rating skill of between expert-Fide master and I think video games is just as intellectually challenging as chess.

Because video games are easier.

Also, I guess, because 5 years from now not many people will even remember a video game exists. Most people move on to the new thing. Chess has been around forever, and 50 years from now you'll be able to go to a chess tournament.

Natureland, Ego is about how people feel about themselves. You are right you can be smart in other games too have a healthy ego no matter what you like to do. People compare chess as being smart because it's been around for over a thousand years. Chess complexity has zero luck with zero excuses to a win lose or draw. People study chess for years. Only .01% of chess players can look at moves being played and can associate it with other games they've seen or played before. And even less can recall whole games at will if asked. Chess challenges 6 out of 7 memory abilities the human mind can utilize. And yes there have been studies and many books written about it. What ever game you choose to enjoy just remember it's a game. It's to be enjoyable not a badge for your Ego. Unless you are Magnus 😂😂😂😂

Chess has been around for many years. Esports is only a decade old. In the past, people used to think novels are bad for your health but now it has been changed. Another thing to consider is, screen time.

Chess has longer tradition and maturity in the eyes of the public. It also depend on whom you ask, a lot of people would view chess players as well as gamers as "losers" and only care about either when they start making big money.

I doubt most chess players actually care about which is better, since most do realize that both are just games, but some people love to see themselves as better than others. In those cases they love to rationalize that video games are just not as "intellectual" as their game of choice.

No one studies to play video games. Most of them don't even involve strategic factors - it's just coordination and reflexes. They're not as deep as chess. You'll never get thousands of openings and variants that you will study a hell to master. Most of them are just silly - shoot, punch, kill etc.

Comparing CS to chess is truly sad.

Also just because you play speed chess doesn't mean you're an expert.

Because playing video games leans more towards how well you can operate a control pad or mouse. There can be a lot of thinking involved too but I don't think in the same way as playing chess.

For me playing chess takes a lot more of my brain power up compared to playing any video game that I have ever played. Rise Of Nations took quite a lot of my brain power to play but chess wipes the floor with that. After playing this game for hours my brain is cooked.

Yeah sure, people just go to any tournament and one with better reflexes wins. Certanly, no pro-gamer or anybody aspiring to be one has ever spend hundred of hours learning maps, match-ups and meta. And every game is a fast-pased click-fest, the whole strategy genre is just a myth.

Sure, chess IS deeper than most games but very few people on that level.

I played RoN too, along with others in the same genre. I agree those are good brainy games but still not as deep as chess.

Don't say that. Have you ever heard about wargames. What about Close Combat series? Combat Mission series? Or Graviteam tactics? While chess is pure tactics, those wargames is much more like chess but with soft factors and randomness. You have long-term plans in chess, what about short-term plans which is common in wargames because you can't predict what will happen next? Chess is symmetrical, but war is unfair, always. You picked the wrong games, games can be as complex as we want. You haven't find one. Just look up what is Combat Mission and you will understands a game can be that serious
