why did nakamura call magnus "Sauron"

Sort:
superking500

on his twitter....im still trying to interpret what he meant

is he saying magnus is a really strong chess player, or is he bad for chess (sauron is the personification of evil in LOTR)

caveatcanis

Because he sees everything?

do you think nakamura meant it in positive light or negative light?

samtoyousir

Positive, gotta be. To good a complement.

Being the best means people (especially your rivals) will be jealous of you.

Calling him Sauron is one thing, but calling himself the world's only hope to stop Sauron sounded more dubious :-)
fabelhaft

Does that make Nakamura a combination of Frodo and Gollum, by the way?

I don't think 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 is going to work against Carlsen.

No, because Naka will never dethrone him.

Chessislife2013

I hate Naka, he's obnoxious and has no respect.

Pre_VizsIa

To continue the analogy, Naka = Saruman or Lord Denethor (you pick).

alexcross90226628

Tough. Deal with it. Naka may never touch carlsen but he has beaten every other top GM in the world. What have you done?

DiogenesDue

Sauron, (who is also known as The All Seeing Eye) seems like a pretty decent nickname for Carlsen, all things considered ;)...

Chessislife2013

Huh? You mean the Great Eye?

Chessislife2013

No.

AlbAmchess

I feel like Magnus would more fit the role of Morgoth in this case. Nakamura can be Sauron, which makes Nakamura Magnus' slave.

AlbAmchess

Although neither of them are evil at all, Nakamura was probably only joking, Magnus probably wouldn’t want a slave, and a lot of other things that would prove this theory wrong.
