Why do chess players hold their heads in their hands?

Does anyone have any ideas about why so many people do this? I feel the urge to do it when playing OTB too. I found the following article on a similar response in football.

Additionally I had the idea it may be an attempt to block out extra unnecessary visual information, however there are better ways to do this (eg hands cupped directly around the eyes). Anyone have any thoughts about this? 🤔

You don't move your head means less distractions, also the hands demand a lot of processing for the brain, if no hands move the brain has less distractions. For something Alekhine told: "when you find a good move, seat over your hands and search for a better one". This also means that with your hands quiet in a known place you have less chances of doing a wrong move with your hands.

..unlike your response, which isn't smart at all.

You want them to hold up their heads with their feet?

So somebody makes a small joke and you insult them, no real response to the topic just an insult. Some players should hold their heads in shame.

My thoughts, thinking of me.

For some people, especially those on the autism spectrum like Asperger,  there is a lack of feedback from the extremities so people tend to tap fingers or vibrate legs up and down to force a feedback. Leaving the hands still on the table or hanging could cause the brain to look for a feedback so create distracting movement. Holding the head/face gives the brain  feedback, both from the weight of the head in the hands and the nerves in the head/face, as to the location of the hands.

Much of it is faking a mush.
