I have no clue what you mean by classical games, but if the game is important at all you have to record it, just in case the other guy says you cheated or whatever.

I'm pretty sure that in official FIDE tournaments you're actually obligated to record your moves and hand a copy to the arbiter. I always imagine that being quite a hassle, guess I'm being too spoiled that it's done automatically here ...
He means "write down their moves in classical games"... as a continuation from the topic title.
And yes, it is so they can study the game later.
The incomprehension in the first line was facetious.
More than for study later, the primary reason must be to help settle disputes that may arise during and especially after the game... or to prove the game happened at all. Imagine a person getting their buddy to submit a bunch of fake games where he won all his games, and you were one of the players who supposedly lost.
This is of course why both players sign the score sheets afterwards as well.
