why do I lose when the clock runs out?

You have to use the exchange button to exchange your extra pieces for more time.
But when you do that, your opponent will get the opposite, and gain pieces for losing time... just to even it all out.
So you'd probably lose anyway.

Checkmating your opponent's King is the goal, not points. The points are only a matter of reference.

Because you are playing on a capitalist chess site. If you were playing on a soviet one you would have won my man.

So when the clock runs out and points don’t matter what determines who the winner is? Does white automatically win?
the one whose clock didnt run out
Subject to the "sufficient mating material" rule.
You have to finish the game in your allotted time. If your clock runs out, regardless of how much material you are ahead you lose. Similarly, if you opponent's clock ran out, you will win.
The only exception is that in a Player A vs Player B game, if Player A's (or B's) clock runs out, and the opponent Player B (or A), has only a King or a King + Bishop or a King + Knight left. In this scenario the game will be a draw as it is not possible to mate someone with just a King or a King + Bishop or King + Knight.
In any scenario besides these three, whoever runs down his clock, loses.

I learned that the hard way, in my 1st tournament and the 1st time I used a clock. I was beating someone but my flag dropped.

Even when I am up points how do I lose when the clock runs out?
you can exchange points for time. 1 point is 15 seconds i think
Btw, op: this is a troll in case you were wondering

I'm not complaining, because I really didn't deserve the win, but why did this get called to a draw? https://www.chess.com/live/game/2640814079
