Why do I play this game when I really don't like it?

This is serious question.. no trolling.

I find my self playing this game but I also find me self hating every bit of it.  I don't like it, hate losing and or winning really... I just don't get why is ti so damn adictive?

Any thoughts on this?

masochism?

I guess that could be one reason but not main... not to me at least.  Although I care weather I win or lose I don’t find it important. I hate it for a few seconds and move on.

If you don't find it important whether you win or lose, that is a definite anomaly for a chess player.

Find what you do care about. Then do that.

Don't hate it.

What you resist persists. Make peace with a game that is overly mental, not as healthy as physical sports.

Maybe you like solving puzzles?  Or seeing improvement in yourself?

Maybe something else in your life is really troubling, and you use chess to distract yourself from it for a short time?

I see the tuna enthusiast has changed his profile pic..again. It irritates me when people do that, I recognize people by their pics! It's getting tougher woth the LEGO figs in protest of V3. I mean, picture macer75 without his Banned symbol.

@OP, If you play it enough, you will learn to like it. It's like trying spinach for the first time, just without the retching, swearing, and vomiting.

Somehow you're deriving some benefit from it. It could be you like projecting the image of yourself as a chess player, the same reason people listen to classical music, opera, or jazz, who don't like those genres: they're trying to impress others. (Ever see "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988)?) Or maybe you just like the atmosphere of medieval names and an ancient game. Or maybe chess is approximating another game you'd like a lot better, and your subconsious recognizes that fact, even though you haven't found that other game yet. Or maybe chess reminds you of some person or time you liked, maybe a classmate or a deceased father. Who knows. It could be any reason. At least killing time with chess is a lot healthier than smoking!

OP, have you tried tinkering with your opening repertoire at all?  My enjoyment of chess definitely has increased as I have found more about the types of positions I like to play.  for awhile I was playing super solid openings but have started taking a more balanced approach with a nice mix of strategy and tactics that I've started to really enjoy.  when I was playing the london system and the caro-kann exclusively, yeah, not nearly as much fun...

Discover sex.

Incidentally, I find that I'm worse at chess after sex, but I'm better at sex after playing chess.  I guess it helps at finding combinations. Cool

I think you just found the answer to your question

I don’t know but I sure appreciate all of your comments! Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

I’m going to go with it being a puzzle game type and I do love solving problems and improving so I guess there is both in that.  I know I won’t stop playing and in time I hope I will learn to like or even love the game.
