why do mediocre minds think chess is for smart people?

I have noticed from the forums that many people like to discuss, no, attack one another over the belief that chess is synonymous to brain power.

STORY- I knew a guy with qualifications here there and everywhere. He had something silly like 15 letters after his name back when letters meant something, but was unable to drive or play chess. He had tried both and on paper was smarter than anyone reading this yet could not grasp this game or eye hand co ordination.

Reverse psychology here I know but- Why must people come on here, who have mediocre minds, and attack people who can't play chess who have proven their mental ability through study? All it says to me is that chess is for fools who like to tell the world that they are smart.

You will no doubt prove my theory as this thread will not get a response from a GM or the likes of Hawkins, but I bet I get page after page of enraged minions attacking me for a reasonable statement. I even bet the first response claims I am a troll.

ive never heard any grandmaster say chess WASNT a complete waste if time. Not once. and on a side note, being able to conform to a cirriculum, getting a phd having the self discipline to struggle through it, doesnt make you some brainiac. smart, yes, disciplined, definitely, mature, maybe. genius is originally defined as a creative spirit. people arent geniuses they have it inside them.

Esteemed chess geniuses:

It is true that most people will say chess is hard, and in fact I was one of them for a few years, I can only barely grasp the game now, but I find it difficult as well.

I had learned 3 computer languages and am working on my fourth (in order Java Python, Basic, new one is Perl) Was top of my class with honors, considered most likely to succeed and had a brain for math that my teachers who had PH.D's never had yet still could not grasp the game.

I finally started when I watched a documentary about Magnus Carlsen on Netflix. It showed incredible ability over the board, and I assumed if I worked hard I could achieve that ability as well. So I read and studied up in my cave and found chess.com. I still am not more capable than Magnus Carlsen was at 7 but I figured back then it was not that hard.

Before this I had tried the game by myself on Lichess and couldn't grasp how incredibly difficult it was, and yet I also figured that even though it is a hard game for people with big brains, it must be for people who were born for it. And so I believed for over 5 years.

Nowadays I look at my utter shame of chess in horror, as I now can figure out most of it and find it fun, and I can understand, that the populace believes it is hard because it is and was and always will be to find a master plan.

and to prove it my father in law has a phd in some shit i cant pronounce and i have helped him connect a modem to the wall. does this make me smarter than him? does his phd make him smarter than me? in his experience, a good attitude went a lot longer than any intelligence he had. he says he is of average intelligence he just knows lots of math... "any shit would be easy if you did it from 6 to 70" are literally his words

i don't think reverse psychology means what you think it does.  also can you prove mental ability though study?

how is this a logical conclusion?

Hawking is the physicist, if you were referring to him.   No one here's enraged except apparently yourself.  Your statement was not reasonable.

using vague terms like brain power, mental ability, smart, mediocre minds & comparing study/academics with chess does little to make anything sound reasonable.

Floating-Duck

It is not that they are mediocre it is just easier to say it is for smart people that to learn a game that will requires a crap load of time to get good at for no return on your investment whatsoever. It is a pretty smart appraoch and talk about your reverse psychology: instead of telling you what a dumb-ass you are for wasting all that time they say ' wow, you are really smart'

Actually come to think of it ...it is pure sarcasm and not reverse psychology

Please change the heading to : why are smart people so sarcastic toward chess players.

WHY DO PEOPLE ASSUME STEPHEN HAWKINGS IS SMART JUST BECAUSE HE SOUNDS LIKE A ROBOT?

HIS THEORIES ARE ACTUALLY GARBAGE AND NOBODY WILL CALL HIM OUT BECAUSE THEY FEEL SORRY HE IS IN A WHEELCHAIR

Amongst the members of the physics community there are more highly respected living physicists, but his theories aren't all garbage. The physics he developed to describe black holes is largely still used to describe them now.

Soooo, if chess isn't for smart people... does that mean everyone who plays it is dumb? Including OP?

Well dang. You learn something new everyday.

Chess and being smart don't co-relate. 6-8 y.o prodigies can beat their chess teachers, doesn't make the child smarter, does it?

even though I don't like ur writing style, I agree with what u say. All really clever ppl have already understood that chess has no relevance with how smart u are, but there are few fools here who try to prove they are smart with chess (probably failed at everything else and chess is their last resort).

Having said that, I do believe that chess is good for the mind (on healthy doses), but it won't make u clever.

true and great example and yet few ppl here remain delusional

And thus the point is proved QED. Yes I am a less superior mind too, but I am not on here offended because someone makes a simple point that you do not have to be super intelligent to play chess. I have beaten many and they were probably smarter than me yet I won. I've lost to many too who MAY have been less intelligent than me yet they won. The point yet again is that brain power and chess ability have nothing to do with each other. Those of you whom had an issue are just annoyed that I have hit home with my point. I'm right and you don't like to look in the mirror and accept the truth. You are just a number and I will never hear of you in an academic manner. You like to wander around and think you have brain cells as you can win a game or two.

Sorry for the spelling of Dr Hawking must have hit a wrong key and this iPad always corrects. Personally I can go out doors anytime I wish, and hold my head high as in the grand scheme of things winning, losing or your thoughts about me will not stop me from sleeping at night. I have proved my level of brain power to myself. I have also shown to myself my ability in chess. I am happy with both. Clearly those of you who have decided to attack are less than happy with yourselves. One day you will realise that your life, your ability in chess are worthless and that like me you are minions.
