Why do most people get flat chess boards instead of folding ones ?

I just don't understand .

1.So much space(inconvenient)

2.Can't transport, change locations

3. Etc....

I mean I can understand one chess board and STILL, but people collect like 2, 3 more and just stack them , why?

You can't even play on them ! With who? Unless you always invite people home . So basically you just need it for analysis and folding one just going to do fine.

In my view it's much more practical and just better over all getting high end folding chess board, which you also can transport easily to your friends house for example , etc...

We are not talking about chess pieces

I think people just think the flat boards look better and then they have a folding one for when they travel.

I never noticed that flat chess boards were common; my "main board" is a folding one too. Furthermore, several friends of mine (and myself too) also have felt boards. These are probably even easier to transport because they can fit into a poster tube (rolled up), which is even easier to carry.

My main set is a roll up board. It's a couple of years old though, time for a new one. I've also got a flat marble board with marble pieces as well but it stays in a box most of the time. For analysis I have a really old set my grandfather brought back from Vietnam, it's a folding wooden board with inlaid ivory and ivory pieces. It's absolutely beautiful but it never leaves the house.

psychologically it divides the board in half.
I had a floppy plastic board with a scratched e3.
Drove me to distraction.

Folding one has a little gap between d and e file , thats why i prefer flat board

I have a vinyl roll up “board”. I roll it up square side OUT over a pice of 2” pvc pipe. That keeps it from creasing.

How come chess games take so long to invite someone?

Because it's a boring game that nobody wants to play.

One piece boards look better! And if you have a chess table you can get a variety of one piece inserts for it. The real question is, who tf is taking their nice wood sets to the Chess club or out to the bar? And even a folding board takes up twice the space as a good roll up. I have a mousepad roll up with a heavy plastic set for travel but when I’m at home I play in luxury.

A single wooden board is much solid. The sound made by moving pieces is different. The looking is also better than folding one. You can find many video demo by masters are using a flat board rather than folding one.

And who are you going to play with your flat board? Masters play with people and your one is at home, are you going always invite people home? Play alone with the computer? , then folding one would be just fine because you don't need to play blitz or really fast chess

The folding ones don't line up properly. Wood warps and you can see that. With a flat board you don't experience this.

In regards to the latter half of post #21:

No, I do not "let" it happen, but "it happens" if they are rated higher than you; age means little, especially if they have played chess for more years than you have. I realize that this 8 year old did not have a FIDE rating over 2700, but I am sure it was still higher than most players she played. I think it would have been cool to win in this fashion as an 8 year old, but for me ... 8 was a long time ago [sigh].
