To enhance their elo
People cheat because they feel like they deserve to win games sometimes. Like, they feel the world is against them, so they try to balance against the “unfair”. But really, chess.com is the last place you should be if your mental health is poor.
Chess is an ego game.

People cheat because they suck at chess and don't want to invest the time and effort to legitimately improve.

Unfortunately a lot of people get their chess all tangled up with their ego.
This can lead to a number of problems such as bruised egos, bent chess, and even engine use.
It's always best to keep your ego and your chess seperate.
Try using a rubber band.
People cheat because they find someone they like better.
