The name says it all.
why do people stall when they are losing?

Thats funny, the games I am losing I usually try to play off the fastest, to cut down on the time I have to endure the bad position. Maybe they are just masochistic?

I seem to do the opposite since I've seen this mentioned a few times. When I'm in a losing position, yet not at the resignation point, I'll always play ASAP.

To the OP...
I have found that some people drag out a losing game because they are hoping that you will close your account and they will win by default.
That, or they want to spite you. They think that they can make you suffer, for whatever reason.
Example, I was up two points in the middle game and my opponent asked for a draw. I will never offer or accept a draw, unless the game is "even-Steven".
So, I told him "no"...but I would accept his resignation. That ticked him off to no end. He called me a "clueless X!%@!"
Then he proceeded to max out his moves. It took two more months (3 days/move) to play out the game (I won). On the penultimate (fancy word) move, I told him that I would celebrate my win with a T-bone steak and a bottle of champagne. So, maybe I got the "last laugh".
He annoyed me, but not too much. Why? Because I always carry 50 games. Whenever I would turn on the computer, there would be at least 20 other games where it was my move...so, I hardly noticed his bs.
My suggestion? You only have 7 games going. Add another 10 or more. Then, you'll hardly notice him.
Also, never take on 14 day games. I have even lived to regret 7-day games. Stick with 3-days, max.
Seems you ignore your own advice if you even know how long the game took. I could never give you that information. Don't care.
14 day games are just fine. All I do is balance my load so I am playing the amount of chess that makes me happy; how long any individual game takes is pretty irrelavant and not information I bother tracking.

simply sour grapes or very poor manners and hiding behind internet anonymity...moral is never play 14 day games!

Right. Your opponent can use his time in any way he wants.
Often, I find when players are losing, they slow down because, obviously, they're trying to think of a way to salvage their position.

Yes there is the possibility of finding a saving line, besides the nasty ones who delay the finish just to nark their opponent

I freely admit it; I play slower in a worse position. But here's another piece of information: I do the same thing in OTB chess!
When you're in a better position, the moves flow naturally and easily and you don't have to think too much. In a worse position, you must either be calculating long defensive lines (in a tactical position) or looking for counterplay; this process can take a long time, especially when there is *technically* no counterplay available; you have to decide which sacrifices to make in order to give yourself drawing chances.
Hope that helped!

And he offers me draw too when he is in a losing position. What i pray is he should entirely forget about the game and time out on the coming 14th day

i hate when people stall on 14 day games thats why i dont play them. i have a 10 day game and i made my first move my opponent still hasnt made one move

HolyMozes, don't tell me you are referring to that only 14 move game you are currently playing? If I should make an evaluation of that position, then is it that it is a dead draw. If one side might get into trouble, then is it white -> you, because I like the pawn structure of black more and he has two long range pieces, where you have one. The difference is that small, that this boring game can go on for ever.
If you really are talking about that game, then close the forum, apologize to your opponent and accept the draw.

@loekbergman
1. Ur likes r not whats always good.
2. If im losing then y would he offer a draw?
3. Stockfish and crittor gives me +1.9 for my position.

To me, this is the one major flaw with chess.com's correspondence setup. The "X number of days per move" is a horrible format. Some positions seriously don't take for ever to figure out, but you get these idiots (I have an opponent doing this as well) who are clearly going down like the Titanic (my opponent is down a Bishop and 2 Pawns with ZIPPO for compensation) who will drag out every move. Every move he's waiting until the bitter end of his time to make. My theory is that they must figure your rating will go up and they'll lose less rating points.
However, I think what they need to do is stop the whole "X number of days per move" and instead do a start time with an increment and a cap. For example, 3 days with a 3 day increment per move and a cap of 20 days.
This way, if there is a severely complicated, critical point in the game where you need 14 days to make your move, you have it, but at the same time, when someone is dragging the game out and being an a** about it, they can only drag it out a couple of days at a time.

Would say the time you have to move is the game setting so you can play 1 or 3 day games. The worst etiquette I find are players that put a 'good game' comment when they think they're going to win the game.

Ah, I am sorry, that is a totally different game. I understand your point of view now. If I was black, I would take my time to find out the best move, but I would not offer a draw.
I never play 14 days for each move, because I am too impatient for that. Since you both have agreed to play with that 'speed', should you expect to take that game a very long time. You both might go on vacation too.
Create notes with your best moves, so you do not forget what you have thought about this position a long time ago and start another game.
When he is offering a draw, let that be his choice and ask what his move is (he has to make one, isn't it?) and your game has processed another move.
I have said it twice that I wanted to continue play to learn from the endgame some more, acknowledging that I was probably lost. One draw (my opponent blundered) and one loss (after one more move).
I am playing with a guy who goes online almost everyday but doesnt play his game against me in which im winning. Bad news is time control is 14 days. Why do people do this?
