why don't they make high quality demo boards

it seems like all the demonstration boards made today are flimsy pieces of crap.  They use thin plastic, foam and super thin boards.  Looking at pictures from the past they used to have nice wooden demo boards with nice piece shapes.

what happened?

anyone else share my gripe?

Shivsky

I do. Also know why the market is not interested in making something nicer => The price of a portable projector (used) is < 200 dollars these days ... so a laptop + projector combo kind of obsoletes the ol'fashioned demo boards and you can get away with so much more with a computer when doing a lecture.

I do know that the fancy super-GM tournaments in Europe still use them for post-mortems ... so have you tried a vendor over there?

Tata Steel used something similar to want you're after probably, but I can't find what they are...there was a thread here about them.

This old fashioned type would be okay (and not take a genius to fabricate).

Scottrf

They still use those Goldendog.

This is so frustrating. The demo board in the video below looks brand new, yet it seems that no chess store is having it on sale. Custom made, perhaps?

TitanCG

Yeah I've only seen those boards in the Tata Steel videos.

Hi, I couldn't find this board many times searching for it, and I'm not sure exactly how I found it in the end.  To anyone who wanted to know if this board actually exists, I was starting to think it was one of a kind right before it materialized out of thin air.  I know the cost is a bit prohibitively high...

I'm so exited, I don't even know how long ago I first saw this board, but I wanted it.  It's crazy how little they tell you about the board, though.

The raindroptime site also has a nice looking magnetic demo board.

Also this looks cool.  When I was buying a demo board, I liked the white and green board better, but I wanted a high quality demo board, where the pieces don't lean out.

There is even an article about different types, historical ones, a photo gallery of demonstration chess, and a shop.
