Why is bullet chess so successful ?

Hello, dear fellows !

Could anyone tell me what is so exciting in playing bullet chess ? It seems to me there is not even time to think properly about your moves.

Tenna

I think you just answered your own question. There is not even time to think properly about your moves.

zerobounds

did you perhaps, think about that?

Bullet chess eliminates cheats. Cheats cannot use chess engines to win.

It does not eliminates cheats. There are ways of cheating in it too.

Bullet chess appeals to the short-attention-span instant-gratification of the current generation.

it helps us think faster. The point of it isn't to not make mistakes(as you usually do when you actually want to win a game), it's to help you think faster. And then sooner or later you'll get used to the speed and then you can focus on not making mistakes while thinking fast.

I used to think that bullet chess was fairly mindless...or at least that is how my games were...but this summer I have played about 2,000 games of bullet on here...now I am amazed at how much I do think in 1 minute.  Once you get into it, it is a lot of fun, and addicting.  I am having a hard time going back to 5 minute chess.

Bugnado

It's quite an improvement over bow and arrow chess.

This could be my lack of knowledge, but personally I sort of like blitz, but bullet (to me anyway) is more pattern-seeing than anything else. From studies of the mind of great chess-players I know that this is a very important part in playing chess, however, as a weak player I believe it takes away the beauty of the game and it interferes with actually learning about the game. I am quite certain that at my level the time being spend on bullet games (except for plain fun) is better spend with normal games. You have more time, learn more.

Bullet chess is about making good decisions in split second situations. Personally, I prefer to play it over a board instead of online since the blur of hands, the clicking of the clock and the pieces flying everywhere is very appealing to me.

I don't especially like bullet, but I sometimes play it to get better at blitz. I'm a rather slow player, OTB even more than online - not so bad in long games, weak in rapid chess, horrible in blitz :) and bullet is a way to improve my fast chess skills, although probably 3 min. blitz is better as there is still more focus on chess skills vs. especially 1 min. bullet is with focus on quick mouse skills which don't help you in OTB games.

If I'm playing a friend who I'm significantly better than, then I become impatient and don't bother to look for the best moves I can find, but rather just make moves that I know are good enough. I love slower chess when I have a close match, but if I'm much better than my opponent or my opponent is much better than me then I lose patience. Bullet chess is different. I could play bullet chess against anyone else who is willing to move quickly (instead of wait 30 seconds once in a losing position just to annoy me) and enjoy it immensely.

Also I think it's true that bullet chess doesn't help that much with playing very slow chess because you never have time to stop and really analyze a position to see which move is best, but it's still very intense and exciting.

I'll also mention how it's a very differnt game than normal speed chess. You can sacrifice pieces just to start checking your opponent's king and time them out or you could play slower at the beginning and gain a winning edge where you can checkmate them at high speed in the end. And I agree with the other posters, I have amazed myself how much thinking I can do in a 1 min 0 second game. I've had some pretty good ones with long forcing lines that my opponent didn't see early enough.

It ruins your real chess if all you do is play it 100%.

I played it almost exclusively for about a year and never could reach above 1700.  After going back to long games, study, and contemplation I reached over 1900 quite easily in quick...but I'll never play it again like i did.  It has a destructive quality, both to chess, and life.

Bullet chess is successful because it is like fast food. In the short term both are delicious and appear to provide satisfaction. But in the long run a bulging waistline, bad breath, bad teeth and a lack of nutrients will plague both fast food and fast chess.

Bullet is a very valid form of chess which requires you to think quickly and accurately. However, I try to avoid it because it doesn't improve my ability to see moves ahead. In Fischer's words, "Blitz chess kills your ideas". Imagine what bullet does.

Zombie_Agamemnon

Tornado, I agree. I think it is good to help improve your observation.
