Why is Checkers better than chess?

Checkers is cool.
I can't think of reasons to categorize checkers as better than chess. But despite the fact that captures being compulsory makes it harder for humans to calculate variations in checkers than it is in chess, checkers is a much more popular game than chess.
Or at least it once was.

in every state in the usa there are at least then tournaments per week
If I remember correctly, Edgar Allen Poe argued that checkers was better than chess.
