Is it really that hard to understand? Board games are not as popular as outdoor games. It also provides more entertainment to fans and also easier to play and understand. Chess on the other hand, is too complicated and difficult to enjoy for fans of all levels.
Why is chess not as popular as cricket?
Cricket is boring, never did see the excitement 2 thirds of the team stand around hoping a ball comes the way, and maybe if they not fell asleep waiting they may catch it, very exciting stuff, my mother used to go every weekend to the local cricket field in summer, she knew nothing about cricket, it was just somewhere she could go on summers day to do her knitting!!!😆

Cricket is more interesting than chess tho. Those who believe cricket is boring, probably have seen only the test matches. Watch T-20 to get the feel and witness nail biting finishes. That being said, Football is even more crazier and addictive!
For every supporter of Cricket. Football, golf to name a few there will be an equal amount who think it's boring, my beautiful wife doesn't have to grin and bare such torture thankfully.

Just the torture of your company. I'm sure that's plenty.
Nor have to spend a fortune to get the green, and sometimes red, marks out of the whites.

There are more cricket fans than regular Chess players but many more regular Chess players than regular Cricket players.

It varies based on where you live.
In North America (Canada, United States, Mexico), Cricket is not popular at all. Most people here would think you're talking about the insect, if you mention "cricket".
I'd wager a guess that less than 10% of the North American population even knows what Cricket is.

That's got me stumped. So much so, that we have a short leg and a long leg, two slips, fine leg and a silly point and an extra cover on the off side, and a third man on the fence.
Soon, it will be over, and spin will be introduced to the attack, in case one of the batsmen makes an appeal against the light.
But a declaration may be made soon, and the follow on is expected to be enforced before the bails are removed for lunch.
