Why is chess so popular all of a sudden?

The following blog post has some ideas, but I don't think it's certain what other factors may be in play.

Because kids have no other unblocked game websites.
Really? Sounds doubtful to begin with (do they not have their own phones to play on) and next question is "Why now?" Did we get some international school project where every school started blocking site 2023?
It is more likely that chess became more popular -> more kids are on the chess sites instead of reverse.

Cheaters who get banned don't stop. They create a new account and keep cheating. The "surge" is an illusion. It's just the number of cheaters respawning every month is hitting record highs. There aren't any new people joining at all. Just new accounts being created by old players.
I jest. I suspect that things are getting close to a tipping point, and we may see yet a further surge in a year or so. If you're riding the subway into work, and every fifth person on the train is playing chess on their phone, people are going to check it out just out of curiosity. This site and others make it so easy for people to join, to learn a few things, and get better. If the site was inclined to reveal their stats, I think that it would show a record high retention rate among users who have joined in the last six months compared to the previous six months.

We aren't allowed to have phones in class at my school so playing on our laptops is much safer and schools probably kept blocking the websites people were playing on and ran out of websites to use that's what I think.
I think the best explanation is simply social media, Magnus Carlson is seen by many as being incredibly funny(showing up late to games and still winning, beating people while drunk, etc) which catches people's attention(especially kids) who then choose to try out chess. Of course, there are other people like Andrew Tate or even GothamChess.
Plus I think chess is such a fun game to pick up, yet still has pretty much endless moves and strategies to learn. Which keeps people playing and is enjoyable.
