Why is membership gifting more expensive than buying for oneself?

I got an annual subscription for a year. I wanted to gift my friend a year subs but the price is almost twice. I do not understand why! What is the logic?

baddogno

Makes no sense.  Sometimes there are small adjustments to account for currency fluctuations but almost twice is absurd.  Have you contacted Billing? (Help>Billing Issues)

As far as I know, each region has its own price regional pricing for the membership, that's all fine and stuff, but when you try to gift it to someone the site charges US standard prices to prevent being taken advantage of that regional pricing.

So it's simply done just so that it's fair for everyone.

Look here's a similar thread discussing the same thing~

The price is too high in my opinion. I can afford it but i don't buy it because i don't see a reason to spend that money.

the gifting is being done with US prices.

buying for urself is doe in ur countries currency

@Abhinav0121 There is nothing fair about it.
1. US pricing is expensive for people in India. You keep US pricing. You lose business.
2. Recipient can themselves pay and buy it. I would transfer money to them. And people in US also create an Indian account and buy in that price. Their inability to stop people from buying for a different region is translated to gifting in different region. If you pull statistics, I am sure more people sub by cheating their location than cheat for gifts.

@gambit_girl, a related problem also happened with me: I want to buy a Raspberry Pi, but the high exchange rate makes it absurdly more expensive (about R$ 500)... it doesn't happen just for you, India or chess.com

gambit_girl

@luised37282 I understand what you are saying about tax. But I am not questioning purchasing product for myself. If I were paying same price as the gift even it were exorbitant I would not question. How is tax different when buying for oneself and when buying for gift?

If u can give ur friend the money so they can buy it them selves, it's probably the best option.

+1

YChess

Because some countries membership is cheaper, for gifting the price is all based on the USA price

YChess

This is to prevent people gifting membership with like a turkey credit card and purchase at a cheaper price to abuse the system

YChess

The reason why gifting is more expensive is prob ur membership price in ur country is cheaper
