A pieces 'importance' is relative to its position and where that position lies within your strategy and tactics. IMHO

Regards

i was speaking of their power irrespective of position. pawns are most powerful pieces after that is the king then queen. why tho?

''Why is pawn most important piece?''

Short answer: it's not. The king is.

so the pawns are only useful for sacrificing so that more important pieces can be developed?

just study the Rut Lopez if you find it hard to believe that pawns or pawn structure for that matter is not that important.

so are the pawns the least important pieces or most important. make up you're minds guize

No one wants to exchange a piece for a pawn. That makes pawns very valuable.

i think there may be some bias here, considering the audience.

If you exclude the  fact  that if  you lose your K you  lose  the game, then you  can  consider the relative  value of all the chessmen.

The pawns are most important because pawn structure is  the terrain of the battlefield (the hills, valleys, and mountains) upon which the war is fought.

That is why  the pawn  is the most important piece.

An important footnote about  pawns:  all pawn moves  are irreversible because pawns can only move forward.  Think long and hard  about  your  own  and your opponent's pawn moves

So we are divided on this issue. Some say pawns are most important while others say you never want to lose a pawn for a piece. They also said pawns are good for sacrifice, which means they are on par with goldfish and goats.

Nope, post 7 has it right.

You can have all 8 of my pawns!  As long as I get your King before you get mine, mission accomplished!

Nothing on the board is more important than my own King!  Nuff Said!

Of my fifty-seven years I have applied at least thirty to forgetting most of what I have learned or read. Since then, I have acquired a certain ease and cheer which I should never again like to be without. (...) I have stored little in my memory, but I can apply that little, and it is of use in many and varied emergencies. I keep it in order, but resist every attempt to increase its dead weight.

The fact that no piece wants to "die" for a pawn is not weakness. It's strength.

Short answer: it's not. The king is.

We play with words.

Without the king you lose the game.

Technically it's the most important piece.

Practically the most important is the pawn.We all try to secure our king with a good defense from pawns.Castling , the only double move in chess has that purpose , to cover the king with pawns(and bring the rook to the game but again pawns will decide which is the good file for the rook).

Everything we do from move one has to do with the pawns.Pieces best positions are decided by the pawns.Weaknesses , attacks, positional advantage , everything related to any kind of advantage has to do with the pawns.

Even in the endgame where kings practical value increases a lot ,  everything is about the pawns.Pawns define plans and manoeuvres. You have to think which pawns to defend and which to attack , how to create a passed pawn , how to stop your opponent's passed pawn etc.

i understand now, thank you. I will put this new knowledge to use very! soon.
