Why is the Pawn the only piece without a hat?

Well, there is an economic downturn going on, so God had to sacrifice a piece's hat. Since there are 8 pawns, He chose them, thus saving more money. Laughing

kco

why can't the pawns wear it like this ?

TheOldReb

Hi guys,

I just had to post here because my icon wears that hat.

Watch your backrank.

Oh don't worry.  President Obama has put into the economic stimulus package 6 billion dollars for pawn hats.  However, I am still miffed about the bonuses the kings received after getting their bailout money.

The pawns are infantry. Their rounded tops represent helmets.

A pawn is the most simplest piece, therefor it has the simplest design.

I disagree. A pawn is quite complex, as it is the only piece that captures in a different way than it moves. It can also capture a piece from a square that it does not land on. No other piece does that.

In 0.5% of cases in GM level games the pawn is under-promoted.  I often under-promote mine as I think the element of surprise is very important against stronger opponents.

In last year's Welsh final I had 7 knights on the board against Dai Young before he back-ranked me.

can you please send that game to me i wanna see it

Pawns are peasants. They can't afford to buy armor after paying taxes to the king. They have families to feed.

ranama

They are runners

Dear Mr Beast 719

Perhaps after reading your forum topic, chess.com will include pawns with hats within their web site board choices. There are many examples on the chess set market to choose from.

I've yet to see any rooks wearing hats though.

Thank You

John Boy.

Pawns wear hat thongs, (you can't see the lines.)

I always imagined that little sphere perched on the piece was a helmet, albeit a simple one.   It reminds me the helmet a pikeman (which pawns essentially are) would wear.  Like this guy. -> http://www.knightsofavalon.com/delprado_swiss.jpg

i agree, the pawns do have helmets!!!  I like the idea of clothing for chess pieces and pawns....they laughed at the guy who dreamed up the "pet rocks" fad also...

Think the problems may have lain with the pawnbrokers? Or Foreign Correspawndence ?

xqsme

Or just lack of respawnse?

I apologise for my mis-spelling, merkin being a word I use infrequently at best it's perhaps understandable.

How large are your chess men that you have been able to fashion headpieces and toupees for your pawns? Or are you merely expert with needle and thread and posessed of nimble fingers? How would you advise a person on the making of similar items for the humble travel chess set?

Apology accepted - an easy mistake to make - in fact the great George W Bush often used to say "I am a Merkin" so you are in esteemed merkin mixing company.

LOL! funnest thing I've ever read. I believe "Dub-ya" was fond of calling all of us Merkins.

concerning the original topic: if you were to put little spikes on top of a pawn you would have a nice little Kaiser infantry helmet I think.
