Why strong players afraid to bet money ???

Recently I walked in to a chess club and offered ANYONE to challenge me a game of chess for $$$ and everyone chicken out even tho some were really strong FM and IM masters there.
I saw people were playing there for money but coz they knew each other and as soon as a new person walked in which was me everyone chicken out ( they didn't even ask how much or anything, just looked at me and chicken out).
I mean I know there's a risk playing new person he might be stronger then you, but come on some are players are really strong there! Im around expert level OTB and I'm not afraid to challenge anyone for money, so why are they such a bunch of pus....
