Why Was Game "Abandoned"?

Sort:
HBKansas

I was thinking through a position in a live game, and with over 7 minutes left I suddenly lost due to "game abandoned".  Why would this happen if I still had time left?  I've played in actual OTB tournaments and have thought for even longer, and the TD didn't declare my game abandoned.

Is there some rationale for this?

I think there is some sort of algorithm that tries to keep people from just stopping playing and making their opponent wait out the remaining time. I played a 10 minute game and my opponent blundered his queen and just stopped playing. I had to wait out the rest of the time with no further moves played by him. So maybe they are trying to fix this

If this is the case, then it would seem sensible to have some kind of warning, eg "your game will be abandoned if you take more than 2 minutes to calculate your move."

I can only agree with HBKansas. Very strange that there is no warning prior to "game abandoned".

my 9 to 10 games are abandoned just because my network connection is very poor but there was 1 minute left for autoresign after connection lost still my game was abandoned. I think this is not fair.

chess.com should do something regarding this.

The time to reconnect depends on what part of the game you are in.

Had several games today randomly abandon without warning of connectivity issues--page refreshes and the game is over. Thinking about switching platforms ASAP. Running a VPN and IP block that prevents suspicious IP's from connecting. It is the expectation that Chess.com had a more intuitive "Range", ie not "Massachusetts Institute of Technology".

For a few hours this morning, from 8:30 Pacific until at least 11, the site was experiencing issues with the live server, which has since been fixed.

Why this thing is to happen?

My opponent take time and game is abandoned, opponent is winner. how it is possible?

darkprince009

Almost all games got abandoned today inspite of being in winning positions. What a shame. Fix the server performance or network issues pls.

bolbobol

Just happened the same to me. Too much publicities and poor server performance. Bye bye Chess.com

Beatgirl

It happens all the time without any reason and without any warning whatsoever. I really do not get this: I am never late, I always play fair, yet many times the opponent wins because "game abandoned" by me. Please chess.com explane this. At least to make me a better player.

Foxeui
Yes, there is a bug that seems to show this or your play took too long but this bug is still a problem that should be fixed in the future.
CrystallineApe

This happened to me, strange thing is, I had only spent about 30 seconds thinking.

Maybe it was because I usually make very quick moves

(Luckily the opponent challenged me to a new game then resigned, allowing me to win)

Yeah today i was a victim of random "abandon loss"... we played for 10 minutes or so 15/10 , suddenly after he made a move it was my turn for a full 5 seconds until I lost with more than 10minutes on the clock , sad feelings about that .

2021 Game without any delay once it happen

ForkingTheRook

I just got "game abondoned" after thinking about my move for few minutes in a 15/10 game. Without any warning or countdown because connectivity issues, nothing. Chess.com has to do something about this, this is really bad.
