Which opening is better to play if you like positional play, the French defense or the Caro-Kann defense? my rating is 1200 and i dont want to learn to much theory.

Probably the caro-kann, but it’s certainly not an opening I’d recommend learning if you don’t want to learn too much theory.

No matter what you play, u need to know some theory. Caro kann is more positional so you can play it

Although IMO, a 1200 should play the accelerated caro kann C5 and the accelerated dragon setup

Personally, I'd prefer the Caro, because the potential to free/get rid of the light-square bishop makes more sense to me.

It’s much deeper than a question of the light-squared bishop. Both are great openings which utilize positional play. The Caro-Kann is good as you don’t have to study much theory and the game is kept simple, while the French is good to challenge your opponent and attack them while simultaneously building your positional strength.

french for beginner

actually the caro would be more beginner-friendly through a general standpoint

If you like to have fun choose the French and hope and pray they don’t exchange

if they do just castle queenside and be grateful that you’ve equalized within the 3rd move

I think that exchange isn't as annoying as it should be. I mean caro kaan exchange is also not very exciting
