will a American ever be champion again

Caruana is an American citizen and could challenge for the title.
Caruana represents Italy when he plays so if he becomes WC he would be an Italian WC . Wesley So also doesnt play for the US Federation and it may be difficult for him to switch .

He already switched. I'll see if I can find the reference.

http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=5202213 has the US as his federation and http://www.uschess.org/content/view/12847/788

Interesting ! I wonder how big the transfer fees are ? I lived and played in Portugal for 14 years and never considered changing federations . It was to my advantage while there to stay with the US Federation anyway ...

From I've found it is 50,000 Euros. Not sure if that is a FIDE fee or something federation specific.

I guess I should have read all the way through that article I linked:
https://ratings.fide.com/fedchange.phtml which links to http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=13&view=category. Section 6.2 has the amount and the fee is paid to the old federation. Though, there are some residency clauses that can waive it.
Also, the NCF could waive it, though it may be too late at this point, but I'm not sure.

Wow ! Thats a lot of money ! I wonder why its so high ?
If he had been rated 2699 then it would have only been 30,000

why don't they change it and make it better? why is it worse?
I dont think they will change it because most Americans can't afford to play events like fide holds in Europe : 9 rounds with 1 round a day at serious slow/classic time controls usually with increments . Also the number and strength of competitors in Europe is superior so players there face much stiffer competition . The weekend swiss event is king in USA , for better or worse , and they are very rare , or dont exist in Europe . Having multiple sections where weak players can win big prizes also dont exist in Europe . Such events arent good for producing top notch players ...
will an American ever win the chess championship again? It seems like there is always a lot of young talent then the flames burns out. Curious what others will say. If an American wins the big prize will it be from this current of young talent now and if so who or is it decades away?
