Well, I dont use either of those (I use SCID and Stockfish)

But, Winboard is a GUI (interface), and crafty is an engine. You will have to download both, I think. (unless winboard comes with crafty installed already?)

Make a folder for chess engines, and a subfolder for crafty. eg. c:\engines\crafty

Put all the crafty stuff in there. In winboard, there should be some option for installing engines, point to that folder and it should be ok. Good Luck.

PS. If you are willing to use SCID instead, I can walk you through that.

how to use SCID? how to simply have a chess engine to compare and learn game?

Crafty is not packaged with WinBoard (Fruit 2.1 and Fairy-Max 4.8V are). So you would have to download and install them separately, and point out ti WinBoard where you put Crafty.

WinBoard can be dowloaded from WinBoard forum ( http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewforum.php?f=19 ) as an installer; you just have to run the .exe and answer the usual questions, and it will be installed on your system. (By default in C:\WinBoard-4.8.0\ , but you can even change that.)

Then you have to somehow obtain Crafty, and unzip it in a folder of your choice.

After that you just have to start WinBoard (a Windows Start-menu item will have been created for that), open the Engine->Load 1st Engine dialog, browse for the 'engine *.exe' field to the Crafty .exe file (wherever you put it), and click 'OK'. Then Crafty will be loaded, and you can use it.

Next time you start WinBoard you will be able to select Crafty from the first-engine combo-box of WinBoard's Startup dialog, or select it from the 'recently used engines' in the Engine menu.
