Windows 7 compatibility

I am seriously thinking of buying a new PC with Windows 7 64 bit.

Has anyone out there experienced any problems with windows 7 and there chess software.

I have tons of chessbase software including chessbase 8 that runs just fine on my Win XP Media Edition sp3.

Does anyone have Chessbase 8-10 and chessbase software along with Windows 7? Any problems?

Thanks in advance,

Chuck

Chessbase 10 ran fine as well as Fritz 10 or 11 and Rubka 3.

Thanks everyone.  Anyone else out there with info.

I have been told that if I got windows 7 Professional or Ultimate they both will run XP compatible software.  That is what I may have to do.

Anyone else with any info please post.

I calld chessbase and asked if they have had any complaints/problems with there software and Windows 7.  They said they have not heard anything negative.

Looking on the web I read where some people are having problems.  I am not sure if the Windows 7 was an upgrade or a new system with it installed.  That may make some sort of difference.

As far as the 32 bit vs. the 64 bit.  What intrigues me about Windows 7 is the 64 bit system.  I would not buy a new PC with a 32 bit system.

As of this moment my Window XP sp 3 is running just fine with the 2 gB RAM it has installed.  Even though the specs of the system I have says it is expanable to 8 GB RAM the 32 bit Windows will not recognize more than 3.5 Gb RAM.  Upgrading the Win XP to a 64 bit program is out of the question since I would opt for the newer Win 7 64 bit.  Do not know why HP says my machine is upgradable to 8 GB RAM when in essence it is not.

Back to my original question about win 7 64 bit and chessbase software.  Any input would be appreciated since MS, HP or Chessbase will directly answer my question.

I have a Windows 7 64 bit machine that was new (not an XP) upgrade...

I have CB10 and Fritz family and all work well on my 64 bit Windows 7 though it took a couple of installs.

Most of of the Chess Informant Cd's work as well (2 older ones do not) but I do not have the pro package--also there was a fix around they gave me about where and how to install. Anything after Inf 83 works with my Chess Expert 5.1

My Chess OK programs for the most part work as well. They gave me instructions on how to install. One or two of my older programs with them did not work.

Chess mentor (CD version) works fine

I did not upgrade to Peshka or CI app's as they really have done nothing to make them more Windows 7 compatible. If you have any more specific questions let  me know

Thanks a lot!!  I have CB 8 and really do not want to upgrade to the 10.  Too much $$$  :-)

As of right this minute I am fine with the Win XP.  Works great but if and when I do buy a new PC I will have it build to my specs from HP or Dell.  Probably go with the Win 7 pro.

I will sit tight right now and see what happens over the next 6 months or so.  There will always be "bugs" in a nw system that will require fixes.

I also think that chessbase will jump on the Win 7 bandwagon and put out some patches, fixes etc if and when they receive concers/problems.

Thanks again,

Chuck

Here is the email I sent to Chessbase:

I am thinking of getting a new PC with Windows 7, 64 bit.
I presently have XP.
Will Chessbase 8 run on Windows 7, 64 bit?
I have a lot of Chessbase software and I am wondering if there will be
any issues on Windows 7

This is the reply

Chessbase 8 is old software and no longer supported by us or Chessbase

Chessbase 10 is fully compatible with Win 7 64 bit.

Sorry I can’t be of more assistance

You decide whether my question was answered.  I do not think so.

Windows 7 have the option of "compatibility mode" as well if you need it.  On the preferences of you app,  you should have a tab that tells your application to run it as if it were WindowsXP.  I can't guarantee it will work, but I can almost guarantee it.

RockingRook

Thanks, I had heard that and I was told that the Win 7 premium addition can run XP programs in a virtual mode or something like that.

I posted the above answer from CB because I have many CB CDs and DVDs.  I expected a more thorough answer rather than trying to sell me CB 10.  I am sure that many users now have Win 7 and CB software and I am sure that CB has been asked about this very thing.

I will probably hold off on buying a new PC for now and see how this all plays out.  Any "bugs" there may be in the program with regards to CB software should generate some patches or fixes.  I have dealt with them for quite a long time and they usually respond with fixes as necessary.

Thanks again!!

A 64-bit system should be able to handle running 32-bit apps.  The OS is designed to do this but to test things I would run just the Chessbase app by itself first to see how it handles it.  I have a 64-bit server at work running a 32-bit 2000 SQL and it has never given a problem.  I think you will be ok especially after looking at the minimum specs for CB 10 and Windows XP SP2 meets the requirements.  So I don't think the 32-bit portion has changed to drastically under the hood in the compatibility department...

Windows XP compat mode is not available in windows 7 home premium upgrade...you have to pay extra and get one of the other 7 versions.

Yes, that I know.  If and when I get a new PC it will be the Win 7 Pro edition.

Thanks I will!!

What I did was take my Chessbase 8 software and went to the computer store.  Then I downloaded the Chessbase 8 on a Win 7 Home Premium.  Worked fine!!

Now I know for sure.  Laughing  Chessbase 8 is my oldest chess software so if that works I assume they all will work.

Now that I know I am not in a rush to buy.  I am looking for the best price ou there and taking my time about it.

The decision I need to make is whether to get a i7-930 or the AMD X6

I am leaning toward the i7 not that I need all that but as I get older I want to get all the new "toys" with al lthe bells and whistles.

Since installing Rybka 4, I've had constant problems with Chess Base 8. Once a database is opening in Rybka, I can no longer open games in that database in CB 8. But, that's just the worst of the problems. Whether the problem stems from W 7 (Vista has many unresolved issues with ChessBase software if other online forums are an indication) or with the Fritz 12 GUI that Rybka 4 runs in is yet to be determined.

ChessBase support told me to delete files with the .cbj extension, but so far that seems to eliminate data without solving any problems.

Since my original post I found that CB 8 will NOT work with Windows 7.

I have since bought CB 10 and solved that problem.

I was able to load CB 8 in Win 7 but the chess pieces would not show the figurines.  It would show P, R, K etc and other problems.

At first chessbase said they thought CB 8 would work in Win 7 but it will not.

you might need to run it as administrator to get it working. right-click the start icon and choose run as administrator. I guess it will work.

RockingRook

CB 8 will not run on Win 7.  As I said above it is not compatible no matter what mode you are in.  It will load but does not have all the functions and chessbase no longer supports it.

To solve the problem I bought CB 10.

Now you can go to chessbase online and download the free version of CB 9.  It will work but has limited functionality.  You can upgrade it to the full version for about $90 which isa lot cheaper than the CB10
