Hey so, if your opponent decides he doesnt wanna lose and just quits moving until time runs out, do you win if you took more pieces? Or do you get a draw?

If you opponent's time runs out, you win. Not a very satisfying win, but it counts just the same as a regular win.

Special part of the game.

I don't see how it is. If anyone wins on time in a correspondance game it's a pretty hollow victory, especially if the other person was winning.

So if your opponent has a clear advantage and unfortunately times out due to life cercumstances, you'd be pleased with yourself?

Unless (I believe), you're opponent has insufficient material to mate, in which case the game is drawn.

For example, I was playing a live game and my opponent ran out of time, but it said "Draw, Insufficient Mating Material". What was odd was that he had both a rook and a queen against my king, but I suppose that was why it was a draw instead of a win for me.

Yup. Builds your rating up more.

I just looked at your thread boasting about how you beat a 2000 player when she was about to win comprehensively but timed out, and each to their own I guess, but know that if you only play mainly for rating points you will not improve. You said on your profile" My goal is to become the highest rated player on chess.com I know I am good enough." Of course the odd lucky win will give you a few points, but in the long run, unless you have a good attitude towards the game you won't gain many more.

Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it.

you win, but of course you,ll wounder why.

a good point, never thought of that, perhaps he just got bored, or whatever.

Alekhine said that managing time was part of the game.  He said it in the contxt of over the board games, but it holds in our context too.  When you start a game here you agree to respect the time controls.

You missed the point. Of course playing high rated players is good to improve your game I never said it wasn't, but it is your attitude towards chess that will hold you back. In order to improve you must be brutally honest when assessing your performances, certainly not boast when you have played a really bad game, and got a lucky win. Instead try to figure out why you were losing so badly, and why your opponent was finding winning so easy before timing out.

And anyway correspondance chess is not live chess. Say I had a three year old sister who only knew the rules and nothing else, introduced her to this site and put her up against the top rated player who timed out one move away from checkmate due to say his internet provider breaking, or something else. Based on your logic she just got a very skillful win Smile, when not even Gary Kasperov could have done anything about it. Were she to play him in a live OTB game and he to time out however that would be an actual skillful win, whether he was winning or not, as there can be no unlucky, or unstoppable cercumstances to make him time out in that situation.

time stopped on game. told opponent and he said he had to do something then continued. happened again, time stopped however after a few minutes later i ended up losing with 2 minutes longer than him? any ideas how he would've won?
