winning on time....ethical. ..??

I just played a game with my opponent wherein I m almost losing because of opponent's decisive material advantage. But only thing was in my favour is he was low on time...n finally he couldn't convert his advantage to full point because of time trouble.

How do guys feel is it ethical to continue the game in order 2 win on time or people should resign from there since he already outplayed. ..??

Let me know ur thoughts...??

Thanks!

This was asked at least 100 of times, but still...

IMO, it's perfectly ok. The only time it is not ok (ethical) is in drawn endgames, RvR for instance.

Houdini_Genius

I mostly play std time control dats y I asked....because in rapid bullet games pre move & fast net connection gives slight edge and more importantly if ur playing that format its okay. ..?

MSC157

My statement is true in every format :D

Pulpofeira

'Clock is a piece too'.

YANQUI_UXO

Yes but winning on time when outplayed completely or in big material disadvantage, is like winning a car race where you were last and all the cars in front of you crashed due to flying debris and such. It's a win, but it leaves me with an indifferent feeling , or disgusted because I won the game but my opponent won the battle.

I don't know, in bullet of course it's another story, there the clock is crucial and I don't mind winning with a king and pawn vs king rook and queen.

Pulpofeira

For me, the car race example is more similar to the case where the opponent blunders. You should always be able to deal with the clock.

TheGreatOogieBoogie

The clock is a piece too don't forget so absolutely.  If your opponent has bad enough time management then they should lose.

Comrade_Jackal

Would I be lost if I had thought just as long (too long) as my opponent?

Jimmykay

It absolutely fine to win on time.

bobbyDK

of course it is ok. time control is part of the game.

Omega_Doom

I'm tired loosing on time. I've lost hundrents games this way. It's disappointing but it just means that i can't deal with clock properly and that's it. It's fair 100%.

Of course we all prefer to "play like champions" and win a game that is well played on both sides.  But that is always not the case.

Managing time is a big part of the game.  Not leaving enough time is, to me, just like any other mistake.  If your opponent left their queen hanging wouldn't your take it?

I play mostly G15+10 here and G30 d5 OTB.  I have no problem with my opponent not resigning and requring me to checkmate them.  At these time controls, anything can happen.

The only case where I would resign might be in a tournament where my position is hopeless, my opponent has plenty of time and by continuing I am keeping myself and my opponent from having a lunch break.  This happens in early rounds of an OTB swiss tournament where I might be playing someone two classes stronger than me.

Sometimes I feel I have a won position, but my opponent disagrees.  The solution?  Play the game to the end!

Houdini_Genius

Yeah...agreed...time is crucial factor and we need to have proper time management.

Well...I mostly end up in time trouble in 6 out of 10 games. So when I have last 5 mins out of my 30mins usually my opponents have abt 12/15 mins that means I have bad time management.

Need to work on it.

But some opponents I played, in 30mins format play like bullet speed I took almost 20 mins n they use only 5 mins how come...? How these guys can play all the strong move in less then 5mins.. these people use engine while they play..?

I wouldn't blame anyone until I have evidence of that.

Omega_Doom

I'm also baffled about people's way of playing. Usually i only have from 3 to 1 minutes left and an opponent has 7 of them in a 10 min. game. When he or she is loosing i'm asking  - are you playing 5 min? Why don't use all time?

Houdini_Genius i have big doubts that people are using engines(at least with me). Engines are exteremely strong and they crush almost everybody very quickly because their raiting is more then 3000.

Houdini_Genius

Okay...I mean not necessarily engine but how come these people can play at blitz speed in std format.

bobbyDK

at the time I played otb chess a lot of players used 21 minutes or more on the first 7 moves. Moves that should already have been prepared at home.

using 3 minutes per moves in what should be memorized opening is a bit much.

some even slow down the opening moves not to reveal that it is planned at home.

they end up losing on time - not knowing why.

InfiniteFlash

I won on time in a tournament this past weekend. The position was about equal for the eval imo, and the guy timed out even with 10 seconds delay on the clock. I'm sorry to say if you have 10 seconds to move every move, you deserved to time out if you did.

I usually play the first 10/15 moves in less than 2 minutes, even in Standard Time Controls. And yes, I have been accused of cheating because of that.

How is that possible? It´s possible because I always play the same lines.
