I played tournament Shogi for a while (1 Dan), and found the lack of a chequer pattern to be unimportant. I'm sure that if the pattern were taken away, on the chess-board, most players would adapt quickly.
Without The Chequer Pattern ?

Why would you need the pattern for the endgames ?
Well, it just makes things a little easier. The pattern is a counting tool, like the alternately coloured bars in Backgammon.

Interesting theory about the triangle thing, so what you are saying that the alternate colour help you to visualise the triangle shape easier ? to me is just a matter of counting the squares.

Picture how much easier it is to play an opposite couloured Bishop ending, with the pattern. One may tell at a glance (board wide), which pawns are vulnerable to the other's Bishop.

Yes it seem the colour is important for the Bishop, just as I thought so.
Not just the Bishop, it also makes Knight-move sequences, easier to calculate.

Ok fair enough. The reason why I asked this in the first place it was when I was going through a game on another website but the board had a glitch at the time and it was only showing the pieces. It looked ok to me.It got me thinking would it make us/me understand the game a bit better rather worry about the colour ?

Some pgn viewers allow you to change the square colors, and also make customized piece symbols. This is chesspad, v 1.0.10.

That image looks more like one of the early video games, than a chess board. Not for me.

something like from the 'Atari' ?
Is it possible to play chess without the chequer pattern ? Or will it be too hard to do it because you are so used to it to the chequer ?
