Ha! Well-said. Anyway, for a mathematician making his way from one set of social circles to another, I'm sure he'll have played chess at least to some extent :)

I have to admit I've never liked Botvinnik. I only read one book by him but there he keeps praising himself and attacking others for various trifles, among them the deceased Keres. What a difference when one reads something by for example Tal.

wow, i wasn't aware that so many of you knew these people personally.
please, if you've never met these great players, save your judgment.

1. Steinitz

I think every great player are little bit bad loser. Steinitz was bad winner too! :D

So we're helpless and can't believe the testimony of others?
(or video, in the case of Korchnoi?)
well of course, we are all free to believe and say what we want but no matter how bad a sport any master of this game is, you won't find me knocking them. we all have good days and bad days, to be sure.
Capablanca is an interesting inclusion, this is what he wrote after Marshall won a tournament in Havana (I wonder what people would say if Carlsen or Nakamura wrote something like this about each other):
"In the tournament which has just been concluded Marshall had luck on a scale that has never been seen before, for having played badly, and not deserving more than fourth place, he finished first"

Actually, to add to my 7, Kortchnoi definitely for that Polgar incident, Mamedyarov for the cheating allegations and... um. Oh, Reschevsky for his attitide towards Fischer, among other things.
