Jeff , do you mean text by email or by phone ? If you have an Android phone there are apps that allow play on the screen. That would be simpler than exchanging text and moving on a physical board. May be some for iPhones.
Would anyone like to play correspondence chess by text message?

Because I have a flip phone that does not have the capability to do chess apps or chess.com.
No offense. It's time to buy a smartphone. T
Sure, I'll play. Sounds fun. When do we start? Also, let's text moves in the forum here. I've seen it done before.

What kind of flip phone is it? There are still some old java applets out there that work for what you are trying to do. If you post your model and make of your flip phone I maybe able to give you options.
I wasn't talking about texting the moves on the forum, but over SMS text message on traditional cell phone. I use the Consumer Cellular link phone.

Also I believe Consumer Cellular has cheap Smart Phones & plans (less than $25/month including data, if I'm not mistaken)...

This may lead into the discussion about the technical problem on the Android device I tried in the past and eventually quit using. However I wasn't planning on seeking advice about this on this forum, but wanted to ask about correspondence chess.

The article mentions chess over smartphones, but there is also a section that describes correspondence chess through regular mail, so there are more ancient ways to play chess.
Because of issues with not having convenient access to a computer all the time, I bought a magnetic chess set that can be left set up for a longer amount of time. It has the letters on one side and numbers on the other, so moves can be sent over text message (such as I moved a pawn from c2 to c4). It would require someone else to have a chess board with letters and numbers, but I suppose those can be written onto a board if it does not have them. Would anyone like to play?
